Fynbos and Fynbos Companions

This week, we're looking at some pretty plants that are found in Fynbos vegitation: let's kick off with this one:

Has slightly paler-rose blooms and a more compact habit.

Did you know that Coleonemas are members of the Buchu family? The lovely aroma of their foliage comes from the many tiny oil-secreting glands on the leaves.

Coleonema 'Sunset gold' (15cm pots: R18.70)

has some of the brightest gold foliage one could imagine. Great for creating contrast! It seems to be wildly popular in certain other countries too: Notably New Zealand and the USA where it is known as 'Breath of Heaven' - What a fitting name!

Stuthiola dodecandra is sweetly scented Fynbos shrub. Once again Fernkloof Nature reserve's excellent website has some superb pictures of it growing in the wild. It is reminiscent of the old fashioned exotic 'Cape May'. R15cm pots: R18.70.

Athanasia dentata is a lovely shrub up to 1.5 m. It has an Allelopathic effect when grown with Ericas and Buchus, but combines well with Restios and other plants.

The Acmadenias are low growing Buchus. Acmadenia heterophylla flowers for most of the year, but blooms are at their best in winter. This shrublet makes an attractive, long-lasting and colourful edging plant.

Freylinia lanceolata has a wide distribution in the Cape, where it mainly occurs along stream banks. This fast-growing large shrub produces the most marvelously scented flowers.
